Bamboo Knitting Needles

Knitting is not native to Bali, It was introduced from foreigners.

There are very few that can do this, and even fewer that can produce remarkable pieces with it.

The supplier I work with has passed this skill onto the ladies that she works with.

A very Fine Artist

 

To achieve these very beautiful delicate images, this artist using a very very sharp and fine tool similar to a scalpal.

This allows him to make the finest strokes along with an incredible eyesight!! He is drawing/ carving upon

palm, the strokes them selves are invisible and only when afterwards he applies ink, the image is apparent.

Precision is key, since any mistakes and the process begins again.  An entire image can tale up to 2 weeks depending on accuracy.

A cotton plant from Bali, spun into yarn, then finally layed out ready to be woven

At the local weaver's..

Up at the foot of the Mountains in the village of Tenganan.

The manual process of Ikat weaving.

In this case they are using the local Cotton Yarn.

To produce a blanket can take up to five years, depending on the colurs used and variety of colours.  The dyeing process can itself take 6 months for a single primary colour, then another 6 month if you require a secondary colour.
